My Night at Club SPY / Interview with Tam Jams

What's up family?

As a part of my weeklong celebration of my birthday I went to club Spy in N.Y. (17 west 19th Street.) I was invited by a Female Dee Jay named DJ Tam Jams who was warming up the crowd for the arrival of Funk Master Flex and DJ Camillo. I met with her outside to learn more about this fine feminine Disc Jockey.

RD: Where are you from?

TJ: Queen from Queens

RD: How long have you been Deejaying?

TJ: I've been at it as long as I can remember, taking control of music at parties and gatherings.  I got on the technical side about 7 years ago by purchasing my own equipment.

RD: How did you get into DeeJaying?

TJ: It was truly unintentional.  I found myself in search of audio equipment designed for excessive use.  I had worn out a number of home stereos and bought DJ equipment to make mixes in my house.  I developed my business after people who heard me at home began to hire me to play at their events.

RD: Your bag of music is in a small backpack? What equipment do you use?

TJ: Right now I'm working with Serato (the DJ Software), a Mac Book, Pioneer CDJ 1000's and mixer.  Having the music stored on my laptop definitely lightens the load.

RD: What equipment did you start off with?

TJ: I initially bought a Denon 2500F dual CD player and a Denon Mixer.  From there I moved on to a Numark (who's customer service dept I fought with) and now I'm on to the Pioneers.

RD: Do you think female Deejays get the same respect and or taken as serious as male Deejays?

TJ: Most definitely not.  I never had reason to acknowledge that sexism existed until I started spinning professionally.  I find that men feel a need or just think women naturally need to be dominated by them and so I've had to deal with a number of people treating my business and me as if we need them to operate which simply isn't the case. Fortunately very little of what I know was taught to me by anyone other than myself.  I think some guys resent that they can't claim my career.  Many times they tend to treat my business with less respect than their own.  Musically though, I concentrate on spinning fluid motivating sounds which can usually squash my harshest critics.

Tam offered me a drink so I had a Double of Jack while she had a (516) code for Long Island Iced Tea.  After the interview and several drinks I hit the dance floor. Fellas let me tell you, the women were off the hook. I took pics with a few of them for ya'll to see. I was dancing my ass off with a handful of ladies. Some chicks feel funny dancing with a dude shorter than them but most of the women said yes to ya' boy. I was buggin' I climbed up in the cage (about 20ft. up) with a pair of ladies but the bouncer shut me down real quick (that beeotch!). Overall I had a real good time and Tam Jams Kept the crowd live spinning R&B, Hip Hop and Reggae. Spy club is definitely the jump off I recommend you check it out. If you want to book Dj. I got drunk at Latin Quarters.

What’s up everybody I know I don’t always get to write blogs but I had a crazy weekend and wanted to share it with you. First off on Friday I almost met my end on the FDR Drive (for those who have never driven on it, it’s narrow and bumpy like a chick that just reached puberty. So I’m doing the normal speed, which is 70 in a 50 when all of a sudden a big “U” shaped chunk of metal came hurling at me.  First I thought it was tire tread and then I was like “OH SH!# it’s gonna hit my windshield!” So I slammed on the breaks. The car slowed to about 20 MPH.  The metal luckily hit the ground but it bounced and SLAMMED into my car and went through the bumper. The other half of the metal was scraping the ground, which forced me to stop. If I didn’t hit the breaks I probably wouldn’t be typing right now. Anyway now I’m stuck on the highway with no shoulder and cars are still flying by. I hopped out of the car and began to yank this 8 pound piece of metal out of my bumper (Pause) before anyone could slam into me. A cop conveniently pulled up and blocked traffic.

SATURDAY I threw on my suit and headed to Latin Quarters to hang with promoter and my boy Los of Los Entertainment myspace.com/losentertainment007.  He gives the best parties in NYC…check him out. It was only 9:00PM and the club was already packed to capacity (Damn Los!) The night started with comedy featuring Michael Shawn of Hot 97, Figman and Latin King of Comedy Mark Viera. These dudes were off the hook. I was up in the VIP getting my drink on…lots of Jack and Vodka got me twisted. The showcase ended with a special old school performance from Christopher Williams. He sung his hit “I’m Dreaming” for those who are too young to know him check out the movie New Jack City. He’s the one that Wesley Snipes stabbed in the hand and said “Pretty MotherF#$%^@. I never liked you anyway.”

The women were dressed extra sexy. Some of them recognized me from P-Dash News and showed me love; I signed a few autographs, took some flicks and hit the dance floor.  Heavy hitters’ own “DJ Lobo” provided the music from La Mega 97.9 and keep the ladies on the dance floor. By 1:00 AM you could barely walk around.

Until next time,
